Cancer is similar to
diabetes mellitus disease in some aspects. Both diseases are non-contagious. They are not cased by any microbial or
viral pathogens. They are also genetically and environmentally determined. The tendency or predisposition to develop these diseases can be passed on from parents to offspring. The main difference is that cancer has a variety of forms and invades many parts of the body, whereas diabetes is localized in the pancreas and it only has two types. However, diabetes can affect the whole body.
Cancer also has some symptoms that are similar to diabetes. One symptom is rapid weight loss. Nonetheless, the cause of weight loss in diabetics is caused by the inability of the cells to absorb and process glucose. On the other hand, the weight loss suffered by cancer patients is because of the competition of cancer cells for nutrients.
Cancer of the pancreas is one form of cancer which initial symptoms are similar to diabetes. This type of cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States. About 32,000 Americans die every year because of
pancreatic cancer.
